Ketcham smokes ’em at Dodge City; eyes first NFR

Sabrina Ketcham and Swivel Ta Fame didn’t just clock the fastest
time at the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo; nobody even came within
two-tenths of it the entire three-round rodeo.
Ketcham clocked that 16.87 in the first round; came back with a
17.08 for second in round two and just made sure to leave them
standing in the finals to win the average by a healthy margin. Win
-
ning the Silver Tour rodeo (July 27 through August 4), which hosts
almost 800 contestants and pays out a quarter-million dollars, pad
-
ded her pockets with $7,264.
“I’ve been to Dodge City several times, but they’ve changed the
arena since I went as a rookie and I like it better,” said Ketcham. “It
used to have a side gate and be kind of narrow, and now it’s a nice
big pen.”
Add her check from Dodge to the $1,600 she earned for winning
Abilene, Kansas, and the $2,017 she gained from a second-place
finish at Phillipsburg, and she raked in $10,881 on the week. Hello,
top five in the world.
“It’s been a ride, for sure,” said Ketcham, who will turn 41 less
than a month before she runs down the alley at the Wrangler NFR
for the first time in her 10-year career. “Everyone is super excited
and I’ve had incredible support from people I didn’t even know
I had support from. It’s humbling to know how many people are
behind you. Actually, they’ve been excited for a while and I’ve been
holding them back, telling them they can’t make room reservations
until after Dodge City. So I guess they can probably go ahead and
get their rooms now.”
Ketcham’s previous best season was 2010, when she landed in
20th place on a $26,822 year. This week, the Colorado native is
showing roughly $85,000.
“Since about Reno, everything has just come together,” she said.
“I’ve been on the other side over the years, too, and I truly appreci

ate this; I don’t take any of it for granted because I know how hard
it can be sometimes.”
This marks the fourth year Ketcham has campaigned Swivel Ta
Fame, who’s now 11. And he still sometimes surprises her when he
sets to turn the first barrel and completely changes his mind.
