The Barron County Historical Society is celebrating their 37th Heritage Days weekend at Pioneer Village Museum 1 ½ miles west of Cameron on CTY HWY W July 9-10 from 10 am to 5 pm both days.ÂÂ
This is the biggest annual event at the county museum that has grown to include 37 buildings since the first building was moved to the grounds in 1964. Each year numerous voluteers help lend authenticity to the pioneer scene by dressing the part, sharing their knowledge of the displays, and demonstrating a variety of pioneer skills and crafts. In addition, visitors are treated to special entertainment and other activities and can feast on goodies from the Pioneer Kitchen or refreshments from the Saloon.ÂÂ
Demonstrations will include rug weaving, spinning, quilting, creations made on a treadle sewing machine, chair caning, butter making the old-fashioned way, tatting, knitting, water-color painting, woodcarving, scroll saw creations, blacksmithing, and operating various types of old equipment.
Patrons are encouraged to try their hands at some of the displays, and, of course, remain behind the ropes of others that need to be protected. Children can experience a hands-on feel for the old outboard motor like those in the collection on display in the Marine Building with the Calista Too, the pleasure launch previously owned by Frank Stout.
The horse drawn hearse belonging to Jim Lundeen of Rausch-Lundeen Funeral Services will again be on display. It was designed and built on the frame of an antique, horse-drawn hearse by Bob Anderson of Bob Anderson Enterprises and Shane Jorgenson of Lost Creek Craftsman. Finishing touches by Carolyn Bartlett of Bartlett’s Upholstery help to re-create the feel of the luxury hearse which was used from 1890-1917.
Visitors are invited to relax in the covered pavilion for vocal and guitar music by Chris Kroeze, the Cabin Dwellers, Nathan Elmer, Bruce Sockness, Lenor Berg, and the Youth Praise Band from Living Waters Church in Cameron. The types of music range from Gospel to Bluegrass to American favorites. Music on the old pump organ and on a Norwegian instrument will be featured in the Ebeneezer Church.
Admission for Heritage Days is $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for children 5-12 with those under 5 addmitted free. The $20 season pass is valid for this and other special events as well as all open days during the summer. The 2011 season began June 2 and will end Sept. 4. The museum is open Thurs.-Sun. from 1-5 pm with extended hours for special events. The full schedule and other information can be found on the web at barroncountymuseum.com.
