Words "ballist" and "striker", and terms "not out", "outer garden", "hand dead" and "please tally my ace" will ring out across the ball field when the St. Croix Loggers Vintage Base Ball Club takes on the Osceola "Homerun" Onions Vintage Base Ball Club at the Pioneer Village Museum this Sat., Aug. 27 in our national pass time as played during the 1860's.
Vintage base ball clubs have been growing in number since the 1980's and are a reflection of how baseball existed at an earlier time. While some clubs may re-enact games, vintage base ball is a broadly defined activity where the only expectation is to play the game using authentic rules from an earlier time. Clubs may be part of a museum or an independent group wearing old uniforms, swinging old-style bats, and shouting words not heard since the nineteenth century. More information can be found on the Vintage Base Ball Association web page: www.vbba.org.
The St. Croix Club is based at Stillwater, Minn. They play a full season of "matches" each year. They can be found on the web at www.wchsmn.org/stcroixbbc. The Homerun Onions are a newly formed team of two years who are making quite a name for themselves in Vintage Base Ball circles.
The Onion are scheduled to play the Loggers at 1:00 p.m. on Sat. Aug. 27. Barrister Bob Rogers will be on hand to describe the action and umpire the games. Cranks (spectators) will be welcome to examine and try out the balls and bats following the 1 p.m. match.
Pioneer Village Museum is located 1 1/2 miles west of Cameron on Hwy W. and will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for this event. Refreshments will be available on the grounds and lunch will be served in the Kitchen featuring a full menu including, hot dogs, hamburgers and fries. Hours the rest of the weekend are 1-5 p.m.
