Saddle Fitting The goal in fitting is to have as much even saddle bar contact to horse back as possible.Leaving no pressure along the spine. This allows the horse to move and work comfortably and naturally. The ideal saddle fit is when there is full contact of both sides of the bars equally on the horse's back. The edges of the bars should not pinch or place uneven pressure along the edges allowing for free movement of the horse. The front edge of saddle tree should naturally rest just behind the scapula of the horse. There should not be less contact in the center of the bars then on the front or rear sections. A "gap" or hollow space in this area is undesirable & called bridging.Saddle should stay in the correct position when mounting & during activity. Unfortunatley, there is no real industry standard identifying the various tree sizes and styles. Generally speeking, the better quality saddle makers are more current in correctly fitting todays horses. They also can offer exciting new saddle tree tecknology & design styles to enhance performance comfort & durability. The more time you spend in the saddle the more important it is to have the best fitting saddle you possibly can. There is also some variation in the terminology describing tree sizes & the actual fit of the saddle. The gullet width is the measurement of the inside arch of the fork. This measurement along with the angel & length of the bars are the most important elements in describing saddle fit.The following terms describe the fit of the saddle brands we carry in our store. Semi-Quarter Horse; Gullet width 6 1/2", bar angel 90 degrees. Regular or Full Quarter Horse; Gullet width 6 3/4 to 6 7/8,90 degree angel Wide Fit; 7 1/4" 92 degree angel. Draft Fit; 7 3/8" gullet, 94 degree angel & longer bar length. Arab fit is simular to regular quarter fit, but the bar length is shorter to accomidate the shorter spine of the breed. Gaited Tree Fit; Anailable in regular or a wide fit & has more flare on bar edges to allow for necessary movement of the gaited horse.Flex tree designes perform very well for gaited horses. Seat size is for the comfort & performance of the rider, and does not affect the length of the bars.
