Dear Chamber of Commerce,
At midnight on July 5th, Wisconsin will join the other 22 states that have gone smoke-free in all indoor workplaces and public places. The new Smoke-Free Air Law (§ 101.123) will protect employees, and the public, from the serious health effects of secondhand smoke. As with any new law, many people must be involved for successful implementation.
Informational business kits have been mailed out by the state to local businesses to prepare for July 5th. However, not every business was able to receive a packet. To view electronic copies of the materials in this packet, or for more information, please visit our local tobacco coalition website, www.W3TFL.org, and click the Business Kits tab on the left. We encourage you to share this information with members of your chamber. The information covers topics such as the compliant line, details of the law, smoke-free areas, who can be cited, responsibilities of the person in charge, and enforcement expectations.
Most of the public expects workplaces to be smoke-free on July 5th. While many people know about the law and are ready to comply, some might not know, or are unwilling to obey it. Businesses in your community will be looking for instruction on how to follow the law, so we’d appreciate your help in forwarding this information on to your members. Until Wisconsin achieves nearly 100% compliance, business owners may be looking for guidance.
The state implementation website is www.WIBetterSmokeFree.com. It contains additional printable information, as well as options for the public to report violations. An anonymous toll-free complaint line, 1-800-NO-SMOKE, will field calls about violations as well as a “complaint form” on the website.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns involving the Smoke-Free Air Law please contact us.
