Walleyes For Chetek
Starting in 2004 a new effort to improve the population of Walleyes began. Rather than planting fingerlings or hatching
fry, this endeavor plants juvenile Walleyes in the fall. In the last three years approximately 40000 four to fifteen inch Walleyes have been released into the Chetek chain.
The reason for all of the efforts that are being undertaken to improve the Walleye population is mainly due to the lack of suitable structure for Walleye to reproduce naturally. There
have been several studies done on projects to build rock reefs
and stocking of fingerlings. The results of these studies are not very encouraging. In these studies it was stated that a better way
to go is the planting of juvenile fish. The draw back, is that it’s expensive. That’s why “Walleyes for Chetek was created.
By soliciting donations from area businesses, resorts, individuals and tourists we have had initial success in funding this effort. This year we are seeing results of our efforts. Several reports of 15 to 16 inch Walleyes being caught. Some fishermen have reportedly caught their limit.
