Teddy and Renick Rock DNCFR
THE RUNDOWN: TANA RENICKHORSE: XV Wild Child, ‘Teddy’
Bay Mare, 14 Years Old, 15.2 hands, 1100 lbs.
HORSE HISTORY: I bought her in 2004 from one of my best friends
because she was bucking her off and Teddy was always rambunctious.
Since figuring each other out, she has been a really good horse
for a long time. We had a pretty bad fall in 2008 where I broke my
leg and she cracked some ribs. About 6 months later I got bucked
off and broke both my arms so we haven’t both been sound until
the past year and a half. It seemed like it would take forever before
we were both back sound!
I finished 26th in the world last year and won the Prairie Circuit
as well. I had a chance to travel to 10-11 UPRA rodeos made their
Finals and won $6700 at the Finals. I ended up the Reserve Champion
Barrel Racer coming from 6th or 7th in the standings. Over
this winter, we have made the finals at San Antonio and San Angelo
and we won our bracket at Houston. Houston was a big accomplishment
for us because we went in 06 and didn’t have any luck,
we were both too green. So, I was ecstatic with how we performed
there this year. I came into OKC with very little confidence. I even
tuned on Teddy during the week even though I hardly ever do that.
I didn’t know what to expect in the fi rst round but when we got
second in the round I knew we were getting it back together. By the
Semifinals we had our groove back and things were back to normal.
The DNCFR was the first time I had to run back to back runs.
I was leading after my Finals run, when Sherry (the last one to
go) came running in, I was just happy to have second wrapped up,
but when she made a good run and it wasn’t quite fast enough for
the win I was overwhelmed.
BIT: Jim Warner Hackamore
HEADGEAR: None
SADDLE: SRS Barrel Saddle, Master Saddles is working on a barrel
racing saddle for me!
PAD: Professional’s Choice Air Ride
LEG GEAR: Iconoclast boots on all fours, Classic Equine bell boots
GRAIN: Total Equine
SUPPLEMENTS: Aloe Vera Juice, Pureform Performance One,
Pureform Concentrated Electrolyte, Pureform Ammo, Pureform
Glucosamine Plus
HAY: Prairie Grass and Alfalfa
ADDITIONAL HORSE CARE & SHOEING: Shod every 5-6 weeks and
regular joint injections.
TRAINING & RIDING STYLE: In order for a horse to fit my training &
riding style they have to be really broke. I do a lot of long trotting and
loping with my horses and a variety of different exercises. I change
my routine all the time so they are always listening and not just going
through the routine. In that way I hope to keep the horse alert.
I don’t like to use tiedowns and other head gear. I try to keep them
really light so I don’t have to use that type of equipment. I want them
to pickup light and easily come back to me which gives them a lot of
snap on the backside. I run them to where my knee is past the barrel
before I ask them to turn and then I want them to be in 4-wheel drive
around the barrel with shoulder up and ribcage picked up while staying
light and responsive through the barrel.
SPONSORS: Pureform Equine Supplements, Master Saddlery
Along with thanking my sponsors I would like to thank a few people.
I would like to thank Robin Johnson DVM for her advice between
my two runs in the Finals. I had never run back to back like that and
her advice helped a lot. I would also like to thank Lisa Lockhart for
seeing that I was there by myself hustling to get back to the arena
to take the lap in the truck and she came over and took care of my
horse for me cooling her out and watering her and such. I also really
appreciate all the well wishes from people that I have gotten since
our win.
NOTES: Although Tana Renick won over $17k over the weekend it
was right back to work Monday as a hairdresser in Lebanon, OK
(her address is Kingston). Her win serves as the perfect example of
the circuit system at work, a full time job during the week and a big
money rodeo win on the weekend!
